ATTITUDES TOWARD THE NURSING PROFESSION AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF NURSING STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN 2022

Abstract
Background: The role of nursing in maintaining the patient's health is undeniable although the nursing profession is still not recognized by society as much as they deserve. This has a certain influence on attitudes toward the nursing profession. Objectives: To assess the attitudes toward the nursing profession in nursing students and to explore associated factors. Materials and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study designed on 238 nursing students of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2022 was used. Nursing students’ attitudes toward the nursing profession were assessed by the Attitude Scale for Nursing Profession. Results: The percentage of nursing students with a positive attitude toward the nursing profession was 85.3%. Age, academic year, reasons for choosing the nursing profession according to personal preferences, following family's advice, and because of inspiring by people who have had success and achievements in the nursing profession had an impact on nursing students' attitudes toward the nursing profession. Conclusion: Nursing students with a positive attitude towards the profession account for a relatively high percentage. Nursing administrators and educators need to pay attention to associated factors in order to have appropriate intervention strategies, thereby continuing to maintain and improve the positive attitude of nursing students toward the profession.
