Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that has been increasing rapidly in developing countries, including Vietnam, posing substantial challenges to the healthcare system. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the treatment adherence rates among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus receiving outpatient management at the Outpatient Department of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, during the period 2024– 2025. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 301 patients aged ≥18 years diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus according to the 2024 ADA criteria. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a standardized questionnaire. Medication adherence was assessed using the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8); dietary adherence was evaluated using the Patient Dietary Adherence Questionnaire (PDAQ), together with indicators of physical activity and glycemic control. Results: The proportion of patients demonstrating good adherence to medication therapy was 85.7%, dietary adherence 75.7%, glycemic control adherence 79.1%, and physical activity adherence 43.9%. Only 26.6% of patients achieved full adherence across all four components of diabetes management. Conclusions: Comprehensive treatment adherence among type 2 diabetes mellitus outpatients at the Outpatient Department of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital remained low, with only 26.6% of patients adhering adequately to all recommended treatment domains.
