KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES REGARDING STANDARD PRECAUTIONS AMONG MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Standard precautions (SPs) are a fundamental principle in infection control, and are especially important for medical laboratory technology students who are frequently exposed to blood and body fluids during clinical training. Due to their limited clinical experience and lack of proficiency in technical skills, these students face a high risk of exposure if they do not fully understand and properly implement SP measures. However, in reality, their knowledge and compliance with standard precautions remain limited. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the levels of knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding standard precautions among medical laboratory technique students and to identify factors associated with KAP components. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 103 third- and fourth-year medical laboratory students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire consisting of 35 items: 15 on knowledge, 10 on attitude (5-point Likert scale), and 10 on practice. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0. Results: Adequate knowledge, positive attitude, and correct practice toward SPs were found in 68.0%, 59.2%, and 60.2% of students, respectively. Knowledge was significantly associated with academic year, performance, clinical modules, and infection control training. Attitude was linked to academic year and prior training. No factors were associated with practice. Conclusion: The proportion of students with adequate knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding standard precautions remains limited. Strengthening practical training and effectively integrating theory with clinical practice are essential to improve compliance with standard precautions.
