Abstract

Background: Sarcopenia, a syndrome characterized by the progressive decline in muscle mass and strength, is common in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and identify associated factors in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study with a control group was conducted at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, comparing patients aged ≥ 60 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus (n =66) to non-diabetic controls (n=71) matched for age and sex. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the 2019 criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify independent risk factors. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was significantly higher in the type 2 diabetes mellitus group compared to the control group (53.0% vs. 29.6%; p=0.005). In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, low body mass index (odds ratio: 1.82; 95% confidence interval: 1.17-2.83; p=0.007) was identified as an independent risk factor. Conclusion: Elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have a significantly higher risk of sarcopenia compared to non-diabetic individuals. Low body mass index is an independent risk factor for sarcopenia, emphasizing the need for targeted screening and early intervention in this population.
