Abstract

Background: Dyslipidemia is increasingly common among university staff and has become an important public health problem, especially among older staff. Objectives: To determine the rate of increased triglycerides and LDL-c in male and female employees of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and to evaluate the relationship between gender and age with hyperlipidemia. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analysis was conducted on 685 civil servants and employees through the results of blood lipid quantification (triglyceride and LDL-c) during the periodic health examination in 2023. Results: The study sample had an almost equal male/female ratio, but this ratio was different in each age group and the ratio of age groups within each sex was also different (p<0.05). The rate of increased triglycerides in the general population was 41.6%. The rate of increased triglycerides in men was higher than that in women in all 4 age groups (p<0.05). The age group 40-49 in men and >50 in women had the highest rate of increased triglycerides, 73% and 35.5%, respectively (p<0.05). In addition, the overall rate of increased LDL-c for both men and women was 18.7%, in which men (22.5%) was higher than women (14.9%) with p=0.01. The age group from 30 to 39 had a significant difference between the rate of increased LDL-c in men and women (p=0.001). In men, the age groups 30-39 and 40-49 had the highest rate of LDL-c increase (p>0.05). In women, the rate of LDL-c increase increased gradually with age and was highest in the group >50 years old (p<0.05). Conclusion: Men have a higher rate of increased triglycerides and LDL-c than women, and the predominant age in men is 30 to 49 years old, in women it is >50 years old.
