Abstract

Background: Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common illness in children under 5 years of age, particularly affecting those under 3 years old. Several inactivated EV71 vaccines have been shown to effectively combat hand, foot, and mouth disease. Objective: To describe the knowledge and practices regarding the prevention of hand, foot, and mouth disease among mothers with children under 5 years old, and to identify related factors in Dong Xoai City, Binh Phuoc Province, in 2025. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analytical components was conducted on 768 mothers with children under 5 years old in Dong Xoai City, Binh Phuoc Province in 2025. Results: The proportion of mothers with correct knowledge about hand, foot, and mouth disease prevention was 18.4%, and the proportion with correct practices was 17.4%. Factors significantly associated with correct practices included maternal age, education level, economic status, number of children under 5, general knowledge, and whether their child had previously contracted foot and mouth disease (p<0.05). Conclusion: The proportions of mothers with correct knowledge and practices regarding foot and mouth disease prevention for children under 5 years old were low. It is necessary to strengthen communication and education efforts to improve knowledge and practices among mothers in order to effectively prevent foot and mouth disease in young children.
