Abstract

Background: Gastrointestinal (GI) foreign bodies are a common surgical emergency. Diagnosis and treatment can be challenging, with therapeutic approaches varying for each patient depending on the location, type of foreign body, and associated complications. Current treatment options include observation, endoscopic intervention, and surgery in the presence of complications. Objectives: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and evaluate surgical outcomes in the treatment of GI foreign bodies. Materials and methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 55 patients with gastrointestinal foreign bodies who underwent surgery from January 2023 to May 2025. Results: A total of 55 cases were recorded, including 36 males and 19 females, with a mean age of 58.05 ± 13.86 years. Fish bones were the most common foreign bodies (89.12%), with an average length of 2.9 cm. The most frequent location was the small intestine (32.72%). The most common complication was peritonitis (47.27%). The average Mannheim Peritonitis Index (MPI) score in patients with peritonitis was 26.88 points. The average hospital stay was 8.7 days. Postoperative complications occurred in 14.54%. The mortality rate was 5.46%. Conclusion: Diagnosing GI foreign bodies remains difficult due to complex complications. Choosing the appropriate treatment strategy for each patient continues to pose a major challenge for clinicians.
