STUDY ON UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PHAN THIET CITY, BINH THUAN PROVINCE IN 2024

Abstract
Background: Accidents and injuries are a very important public health problem, which is increasing over time. In a 2020 study conducted, the prevalence of injuries among secondary school students was 34.2%. Objective: To determine the rate of injury accidents and some related risk factors in junior high school students in Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province in the first 6 months of 2024. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study design was carried out among 729 secondary school students in Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province in the first 6 months of 2024. Results: The injury rate among junior high school students in Phan Thiet City was 16.3%. The rate was higher among 9th-grade students compared to 8th-grade students, OR=1.8 (1.0-3.39, p=0.045), weak students with poor academic performance are higher than good students OR=2.59 (1.0-6.12, p=0.018), students whose mothers have a level of education ≤ secondary school were higher than ones with a level of education ≥ high school OR=1.535 (OR=1.014-2.324, p=0.042), economically poor students are higher OR=1.900 (1.001-3.615, p=0.047), students with incorrect knowledge about injury prevention are higher OR=1.764 (1.186-2.623, p=0.005). Conclusion: The rate of 16.3% among student injuries was an alarming figure, showing the prevalence and seriousness of this problem in the school environment. This raises an urgent need for preventive measures to reduce the rate of school injuries.
