STUDY ON MOTHERS’ AWARENESS OF SIGNS OF PREUMONIA AMONG CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS AND RELATED FACTORS

Abstract
Background: Pneumonia is one of the primary causes of death in children under 5 years of age. The mortality rate from pneumonia accounts for 75% of respiratory diseases, of which the mortality rate in children accounts for 30-35%. Objectives: Describe the percentage of mothers with correct awareness of signs of pneumonia among children under five years old and determine related factors to occupation, education level, the total number of children in the family, sources of access to information, health facilities sending children to the doctor and self-medicating with mothers’ correct awareness of signs of pneumonia in children under five years old at the Central Highlands General Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to describe mothers’ knowledge and awareness regarding childhood pneumonia at The Central Highland General Hospital between March and June 2021. Results: Research results on 416 mothers showed that only 35,34% of mothers have correct awareness of signs of pneumonia among children under five years old; Statistical analysis showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the correct awareness of signs of pneumonia and the sources accessing information from relationships and friendships (p=0.03; OR=1.83); Places of medical examination for the child: hospital (p<0.001; OR=1.83), private clinic (p=0.017; OR=2.75) and self-medication at the pharmacy (p< 0.001; OR=2.87). Conclusion: Awareness of mothers with children under 5 years old about signs of pneumonia is still low. Related factors to sources of information access from relatives and friends, taking the child to the hospital and buying medicine at the pharmacy with mothers’ correct awareness of signs of pneumonia in children under five years old at the Central Highlands General Hospital.
