Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition characterized by persistent hyperglycemia that leads to serious complications. Evaluating diabetes-related knowledge provides direction for the effective design and implementation of outpatient health education programs. Objective: To evaluate disease knowledge and identify related factors among type 2 diabetes mellitus in outpatient treated at Can Tho Cardiovascular Hospital in 2024-2025. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 151 outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, in which data were collected through face-to-face interviews and disease knowledge was evaluated using the 24-item Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ-24). Results: The mean age of the outpatients was 63.0 ± 9.6 years, and 66.2% were aged 60 years or above, and females (58.9%). A total of 62.3% of patients achieved a good level of knowledge regarding diabetes, the mean knowledge score was 13.65 ± 3.36. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that the knowledge score was negatively associated with age (p=0.011) and the number of medications (p=0.027), but positively associated with educational level (p=0.023) and the ability to differentiate antidiabetic medications (p=0.047). Conclusion: Knowledge about diabetes mellitus remains limited. Specialized health education programs should be implemented to enhance patients' knowledge, help them control blood glucose levels and improve their quality of life.
