SOME GENDER DIFFERENCES IN ISCHEMIC STROKE PATIENTS AT CAN THO GENERAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Patients with ischemic stroke exhibit clinical and treatment outcome differences between genders. While studies on ischemic stroke have been conducted in Can Tho, they have not focused on clarifying these gender-based differences. Objectives: To describe the differences in clinical characteristics and outcomes of ischemic stroke patients between males and females. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 124 ischemic stroke patients at Can Tho General Hospital from July 2024 to December 2024. Results: Among the 124 patients (76 males, 48 females, average age 67±10 years), males had higher risk factors such as hypertension, smoking, and alcohol use (p<0.05). Conversely, females had higher rates of diabetes, dyslipidemia, and coronary artery disease (p<0.05). According to the TOAST classification, females had a higher proportion of small vessel disease-related strokes (p=0.033). After 3 months followup, men had more functional dependence mRS>2 than women, however, there was no statistical difference (p=0.712). Conclusions: Gender differences exist in risk factors, TOAST classification subtypes, and there is no difference in outcomes between the two genders three months after a stroke.
