Abstract

Background: Umbilical hernias negatively affect patients' quality of life. In adults, treatment is necessary due to the high risk of complications. Other surgical techniques have certain limitations, including high costs and increased complication rates. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes, safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic retro-rectus mesh placement for umbilical hernia repair. Objectives: To assess the outcomes of umbilical hernia repair using laparoscopic retro-rectus mesh placement at Can Tho General Hospital. Materials and methods: A clinical interventional study was conducted without a control group, included 43 patients diagnosed with umbilical hernias from March 2022 to March 2025. Results: The study included 27 female and 16 male patients, with a mean age of 57.23 ± 10.18 years. The average hernia defect size measured intraoperatively was 27.81 ± 10.24 (mm). The mean operative time was 108.60 ± 22.10 (minutes), and the average length of hospital stay post-surgery was 4.63 ± 1.04 (days). No cases of recurrence were recorded. Conclusion: Laparoscopic retro-rectus mesh placement is a safe, effective, and viable approach for umbilical hernia repair.
