Abstract

Background: Numerous studies spanning cellular, histological, animal, and clinical experimental levels have demonstrated the effectiveness of scalp acupuncture techniques in motor recovery following ischemic stroke. The combination of electroacupuncture and physical therapy has been recognized for its efficacy in post-stroke motor recovery therapy. Therefore, the integration of three methods scalp acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and physical therapy yield optimal therapeutic outcomes for patients? Objectives: To evaluate the outcomes of motor function recovery using scalp acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and physical therapy in patients after ischemic stroke. Materials and methods: 64 patients after ischemic stroke treated at Long An Traditional Medicine Hospital. This is a randomized controlled clinical intervention study with two groups: one group receiving electro-acupuncture combined with physical therapy, and the other receiving scalp acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and physical therapy. Both groups were followed continuously for 21 days. The Barthel Index, WOLF Motor Function Test, 10-meter Walk Test, and muscle strength scales were used for assessment. Results: A total of 64 patients completed the study, equally divided into two groups. In the intervention group, the Barthel Index showed that 90.63% of patients had good to moderate improvement. The WOLF score was 65.21 ± 8.11 points; the 10-meter walk speed was 1.04 ± 0.24 m/s; lower limb muscle strength was rated 3.18 ± 1.11 points, and upper limb muscle strength was 3.41 ± 0.15 points after 21 days, with statistically significant differences between the two groups. Conclusions: Scalp acupuncture combined with electroacupuncture and physical therapy provides better motor function recovery after stroke compared to electroacupuncture and physical therapy alone.
