THE CURRENT STATUS OF CERTAIN STUDY SKILLS AMONG STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN 2023

Abstract

Background: Academic skills play an important role in the academic success of university students, however, many students do not prioritize or effectively apply these essential strategies. For medical students, academic skills become even more essential due to the large and constantly updated volume of knowledge throughout the training process. Developing academic skills serves as a foundation for medical students to improve their academic performance and enhance their professional competence in the future. Objectives: 1)To describe the status of study skills among students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2022- 2023. 2) To examine some factors related to the study skills of students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2022-2023. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analytical components was conducted on 1068 regular students from cohorts 44 to 48 at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2023. Student learning skills were assessed using a survey questionnaire based on UHCL Counseling Services, consisting of 64 questions equally divided into 8 skill areas. Factors related to learning skills included gender, academic performance, external influences beyond the university, community, society, and government. Results: 59.3% of students achieved adequate academic skills. Among them, the highest proportion with good time management and procrastination control skills was 11.0%. The highest percentage of students with average-level skills was in reading and identifying main ideas, at 60.6%. Meanwhile, the highest percentage of students with poor skills was in writing, at 51.4%. There was a statistically significant relationship between academic skills and factors such as gender, community, society and government. Conclusion: To enhance students’ learning outcomes, the university should develop structured training programs and and interventions to support students in acquiring effective learning strategies.
