SURVEY OF KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES, AND PRACTICES REGARDING MEDICAL WASTE CLASSIFICATION AMONG STUDENTS INTERNING AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Medical waste carries a high risk of infection, posing threats to healthcare workers, patients, and the community if not properly managed. Proper classification of medical waste is a critical in minimizing risks and optimizing waste treatment efficiency. Healthcare science students who both generate medical waste and participate in waste classification must strictly adhere to medical waste classification regulations. Objectives: To describe the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding medical waste classification among interns at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2024. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 440 medical students interning at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2024. Results: Among 440 students participating in the study, 89.1% demonstrated adequate knowledge of medical waste classification. Within the knowledge section, the highest correct response rate (95.0%) was observed for "Principles of Medical Waste Collection. A positive attitude toward medical waste classification was observed in 98.9% of participants, while 84.6% demonstrated correct practice. Conclusion: Interns at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital showed strong interest in medical waste classification and demonstrated a good level of knowledge, positive attitudes, and appropriate practices in this field.
