Abstract

Background: Anemia is a common hematological disorder in neonates that can have longterm effects on the growth and development of the child. Clearly identifying the factors associated with anemia in neonates, particularly during the early neonatal period, allows for early intervention, which can significantly reduce neonatal mortality rates. Objectives: 1. To determine the prevalence and describe some characteristics of anemia in early-stage newborns. 2. To evaluate some factors associated with anemia in early-stage newborns. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analysis was conducted on 143 early - stage newborns at the Neonatal Department of Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital from September 2023 to September 2024. Results: The prevalence of early neonatal anemia was 54.5%. Among these, 60.8% was associated with pathological conditions, and up to 79.5% of the anemic group having a birth weight ≥ 2500 g. Symptoms included jaundice (64.6%) and pallor (93%). Conditions such as jaundice, with bilirubin levels > 250 mmol/L, and the presence of a thick placenta were independent factors associated with anemia in newborns with pathological conditions. Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia in infants with pathological conditions was 54.5%. Infants with pathological jaundice, term infants with jaundice, and mothers with closely spaced pregnancies increased the risk of anemia.
