Abstract

Background: Many studies show that diabetic patients have higher risks of depression than non-diabetic ones. In addition, depression is often accompanied by other mental disorders such as anxiety, which increases the burden of disease. Objectives: To determine the rate of depression and anxiety disorders among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes treated at a general hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on patients aged 60 years and older with confirmed diagnosis and outpatient treatment for at least 3 months at the Outpatient Departments, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The data collection was carried out from March 2022 to May 2022. We used PHQ-9 and GAD-7 questionnaires to determine levels of depressive and anxiety disorders. Results: 91 patients participated in the study, in which female accounted for 64.8%. The majority had primary education (33%), belonged to the age group of 60-70 (68.1%), were married (63.7%) and lived with the whole family (89%). The rate of patients with depression was 20.9% (19 people). The anxiety rate was 8.8% (8 people), mostly mild. The rate of depression associated with anxiety disorder was 26.32%. Conclusion: Depression, anxiety alone, and in combination accounted for a relatively high proportion among type 2 diabetes out-patients.
Patients should be screened periodically for mental health at out-patient clinics.
