A STUDY ON THE CHARACTERISTICS AND RELATIONSHIP OF INFERIORITY COMPLEX AND SUPERIORITY COMPLEX AMONG STUDENTS OF HONG BANG INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY IN 2023
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Inferiority complex (IC) is a psychological state marked by persistent insecurity and low self-esteem, which may lead to a superiority complex (SC). In Vietnam, no studies have examined this among physically healthy individuals, especially students - a group under mental and developmental pressure. Objectives: The characteristics and relationship between IC and SC were examined; the association between IC and SC was further analyzed. Materials and methods: Crosssectional descriptive study on 660 students at Hong Bang International University in 2023, using the IC scale based on Sorensen Self-esteem Test, and the SC scale, both previously validated. The association between the two complexes was analyzed using the Chi-square test and logistic regression (p < 0.05). Results: The prevalence of the IC among students was 30%, more common in females and English classes. The prevalence of the SC was 29%, mainly in males and students majoring in Economics and Management. Lack of confidence increases the risk of having the SC (OR = 1.26), while feelings of shyness tend to reduce this risk (OR = 0.81). Conclusions: Both inferiority and superiority complexes show notable prevalence and a statistically significant relationship.
