HOME-BASED PALLIATIVE CARE NEEDS OF CANCER PATIENTS AT CAN THO ONCOLOGY HOSPITAL IN 2024

Abstract
Background: Cancer patients face numerous challenges, including treatment side effects, disease complications, psychological distress, and the burden of prolonged hospitalization. Homebased palliative care not only enhances patients' quality of life but also helps alleviate the strain on inpatient healthcare systems. Objectives: To assess the home-based palliative care needs of cancer patients undergoing treatment at Can Tho Oncology Hospital. Materials and methods: A crosssectional descriptive study of 244 cancer patients undergoing inpatient treatment at Can Tho Oncology from July to October 2024. Results: 48.4% of cancer patients expressed a need for palliative care at home. The most common needs identified were: Information on disease prognosis and treatment methods (58.6%), disease diagnosis (58.2%); Professional nursing care (57.4%); Better symptom management (54.5%); Encouragement and support from family and loved ones (82.4%); Caregivers who listen, show concern, and provide emotional support (66%); Reduced financial anxiety due to income loss and additional medical expenses (69.3%); Respectful treatment and normal social interactions (53.3%); Financial assistance (72.1%). Conclusion: The demand for home-based palliative care among cancer patients is relatively high, highlighting the urgent need to implement and expand such services.
