Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia, also known as muscle atrophy, is a condition characterized by a decline in muscle mass and strength, primarily occurring in older adults. It increases the risk of falls, fractures, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cognitive impairment, and reduces the ability to perform daily activities. This leads to a loss of independence and greater reliance on caregivers, adding to the healthcare burden. Identifying sarcopenia and its related factors in the elderly can help propose preventive measures to improve their health and quality of life. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its some associated factors among the elderly in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city, in 2024. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 356 individuals aged 60 and older in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city, in 2024. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia among the elderly was 46.9%. Statistically significant factors associated with sarcopenia include diabetes (OR=3.3; p=0.005), hypertension (OR=0.2; p=0.026); nutritional status: malnutrition/risk of malnutrition according to MNA-SF scoring (OR=33.8; p<0.001), malnutrition (OR=7.4; p=0.008) and overweight/obesity (OR=0.2; p<0.001) based on IDP&PRO classification. Conclusion: The prevalence of sarcopenia among older adults in the community is high. Effective interventions and preventive measures are needed to enhance health, improve quality of life, and reduce the healthcare burden.
