CRITICAL THINKING SKILL IN INTENSIVE CARE NURSING PRACTICE OF NURSING STUDENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Critical thinking (CT) is a core competency that enables nursing students to enhance patient care, especially in intensive care unit (ICU) settings. However, studies on CT in the context of ICU nursing among Vietnamese nursing students remain limited. Objectives: To assess the level of CT skills in ICU care among nursing students and examine the relationship between CT and their self-confidence in providing ICU care. Materials and method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 120 final-year nursing students at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City. CT skills were measured using the Critical Thinking Skill Assessment Scale (CTSAS), and self-confidence in ICU care was assessed using the Nursing Student Self-Efficacy Scale (NSSES). Results: The mean CT score was 188.52 ± 32.52. There was a positive correlation between self-confidence in ICU care and CT skills (r = 0.45, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Nursing students’ CT skills remain in need of improvement, particularly in the domains of explanation (information categorization), analysis (identifying assumptions), evaluation (reviewing feedback), inference (applying reasoning), argumentation (predicting responses), and self-regulation (analyzing consistency). Enhancing targeted training programs and fostering clinical confidence may contribute to the sustainable development of critical thinking in nursing students.
