QUALITY OF LIFE IN HOSPITALIZED CIRRHOTIC PATIENTS AT CAN THO CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Cirrhosis is a chronic disease characterized by progressive inflammation and fibrosis of the liver, leading to the replacement of healthy liver parenchyma with fibrotic tissue, scarring, and regenerative nodules, resulting in structural deformation of the liver. Cirrhosis negatively impacts patients' quality of life due to the numerous complications associated with the disease. Furthermore, cirrhosis affects physical and mental health, social relationships, and reduces work productivity, significantly impairing patients' quality of life and overall well-being. Objectives: To describe the quality of life status of cirrhotic patients admitted to Can Tho Central General Hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study on 237 patients diagnosed with cirrhosis assessing their quality of life using the SF-36 scale. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 59.1% and 40.9%, respectively. Age distribution among the groups 18–44, 45–59, and 60 years and older was 10.2%, 27%, and 62.8%, respectively. The distribution of Child-Pugh B and C stages was 55.7% and 44.3%, respectively. The average quality of life scores across eight domains—physical functioning, role limitations due to physical health, bodily pain, general health, social functioning, role limitations due to emotional problems, vitality, and mental health—were 17.9 ± 12.7, 8.9 ± 21.1, 24 ± 16.6, 35.4 ± 22.2, 34.2 ± 17.2, 9.2 ± 20.9, 28 ± 12.6 and 38.6 ± 14.7 respectively. Conclusion: Our study results indicate that the average quality of life of patients in the sample is at low to moderate levels. Among them, the majority of patients exhibit a low quality of life.
