Abstract

Background: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) can progress rapidly and cause severe complications, especially in children. Identifying clinical and subclinical characteristics and evaluating treatment outcomes in pediatric patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is crucial for early diagnosis and improving prognosis. Objectives: To describe the clinical, paraclinical, and treatment outcomes of children with HFMD admitted to the ICU at Can Tho Children's Hospital. Materials and methods: A case series descriptive study on 45 cases of HFMD admitted to ICU. Results: The most frequent symptoms during ICU were tachypnea accounting for 64,4%, hypertension at 66.7%, tachycardia >150 beats/minute at 51.2%; the proportion of children with hyperglycemia >8.9 mmol/L was 2.2%, EV-71 IgM/IgG rapid test was positive in 40% of cases, 40% of children had reduced hemoglobin levels, 24,4% had leukocytosis with a white blood cell count >16.000 cells/mm³, 31.1% had thrombocytosis with a platelet count >400.000 cells/mm³; the median number of treatment days in the Intensive Care Unit was 4 (4-5) days, with no recorded mortality. Conclusion: Common clinical symptoms of children included tachypnea, tachycardia >150 beats/minute, hypertension, fever ≥39°C, and fever lasting ≥3 days. Paraclinical showed that more than half of the rapid Enterovirus 71 IgM/IgG tests were positive, and almost half of the children had reduced hemoglobin levels. All children recovered and were discharged, the median number of treatment days in the ICU was 4 (4-5) days.
