Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common intestinal disease worldwide, which greatly impacts the quality of life of patients. Objectives: To assess the change in quality of life among irritable bowel syndrome patients after 3 months of intervention, by routine counseling. Materials and methods: a randomized controlled trial study was performed on patients with irritable bowel syndrome who came to receive out-patient care at Soc Trang Provincial General Hospital and had poor quality of life score (IBS-QOL >90 points). Patients were consulted monthly for 3 months, provided with information on disease treatment including general principles, diet, and exercise. Results: There were 77 patients in the intervention and 81 patients in the control group. After three months, the quality of life of patients in the intervention group was better than in the control group (32.5% and 7.4%, respectively). The effectiveness of the intervention improved by 25.1% (p<0.001). The mean IBS-QOL score of patients in the intervention group decreased statistically significantly compared to the control group. The effect size was 0.37. Conclusion: Periodic counseling for irritable bowel syndrome patients had a significant effect on their quality of life.
