Abstract

Background: The garment industry harbours several risk factors that may adversely affect the health of workers, such as microclimatic conditions, inadequate lighting, dust exposure, and a high prevalence of nasopharyngeal diseases, with an incidence rate of 73.2%. Objectives: To evaluate the current state of workers’ health at Lac Thuy Garment Company, and investigate factors associated with their health. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey on 363 workers at Lac Thuy Garment Company from March 2021 to November 2021. Data collection methods: using health examination records and direct interviews with garment workers. Results: Workers were classified into health categories I, II, III, and IV, accounting for 9.6%, 53.4%, 25.4%, and 11.6%, respectively. The most common diseases included dental and oral conditions (33.3%), cardiovascular diseases (29.5%), gynaecology conditions (26.7%), and eye diseases (19.6%). There was no statistically significant relationship between workers' years or work area and their health status (p>0.05). However, workers' years were significantly associated with digestive diseases (OR=1.19, p=0.01). There was no association between workers' years or work area and other diseases (p>0.05). Perceived noise is associated with post-shift headaches (OR=1.92, p=0.005), perceived dust is associated with nasal itching, congestion (OR=1.68, p=0.000), and blurred vision (OR=3.99, p=0.03), and perceived lighting is associated with blurred vision (OR=10.26, p=0.000) and headaches (OR=3.71, p=0.000). Conclusions: The majority of workers are in good health. The most common diseases include dental and oral conditions, cardiovascular diseases, gynaecology conditions, and eye diseases. Workers' years were significantly associated with digestive diseases, and workers’ perceptions of workplace environmental factors were associated with the occurrence of certain health symptoms following their work shifts.
