Abstract

Background: Gingivitis is a disease with a high prevalence in the community (over 80% of the population) and it can be treated by scaling teeth and Metrogyl Denta. There are few studies about this kind of treatment method in Viet Nam. Objectives: To survey clinical features of  gingivitis and evaluate the results of gingivitis treatment by scaling and Metrogyl Denta. Materials and methods: A double-blind, descriptive study with intervention on 68 patients with gingivitis for examination and treatment by scaling and Metrogyl Denta at the Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. The patients were randomly assigned into two groups. The odd-numbered group received placebo (control group), and the even-numbered group received Metrogyl Denta (MET group). Both groups were re-examined and scaling teeth. Results: After 1 week, the oral hygiene index-simple (OHI-S) of the control group decreased by 2,3%, and after 2 weeks decreased by 69% and decreased to 67% at the end of the study, while in the MET group in the first week decreased by 16% and after 2 weeks reduced 90% and continued to reduce 95% at the end of the study. For gingivitis index (GI), after 1 week the MET group decreased by 25%, after 2 weeks it decreased by 55% and after 3 weeks of treatment decreased to 79% while the control group in the first week increased by 2.8%, after 2 weeks only decreased 19% and after 3 weeks of treatment decreased by 44%. The difference in GI, OHI-S indexes at baseline compared to at 2 weeks and 3 weeks was statistically significant p<0.05 (Paired-Samples T-Test). Conclusions: Scaling teeth combined with Metrogyl Denta helps to reduce the level of inflammation and quickly improve clinical symptoms of the gingivitis and treatment time is shorter.
