Abstract

Background: Mental health problems among young Vietnamese range from 8 to 29 percent. Cigarette smoking and alcohol use negatively impact mental health and have been mentioned in medical literatures. Students face a lot of pressures in life and study; they can turn to using tobacco and alcohol as a solution to cope with pressure, but it also affects their mental health. Objectives: To determine the rate of students experiencing stress, anxiety, depression and its association with smoking and alcohol use among students. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of 738 students in Dong Thap province by April 2023. Results: The proportion of students experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression disorders was 28.3%, 47.7%, and 34.7%, respectively. Students using tobacco accounted for 4.7%. Students using alcoholic beverages were 38.9%. Stress was associated with students' alcohol consumption behavior (PR=1.49; 95% CI: 1.16-1.93). Anxiety disorders associated with smoking behavior (PR=1.47; 95% CI: 1.15-1.88), alcohol consumption (PR=1.28; 95% CI: 1.07-1.53) of students. Depression in students was associated with smoking behavior (PR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.02-2.25), alcohol consumption (PR=1.36; 95% CI: 1.06-1.76). Conclusions: Smoking is associated with anxiety, depression; alcohol consumption behaviour was associated with stress, anxiety, and depression disorders in students.
