Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Self-directed learning plays a crucial role in the professional development of nursing students, helping to expand their knowledge and improve the quality of practice. Therefore, one of the important tasks of nursing education is to develop self-directed learning abilities in students. Objectives: To determine self-directed learning readiness among undergraduate nursing students at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and identify related factors. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 266 nursing students studying at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in 2024. The student’s readiness for self-directed learning was assessed using Dang Thi Thanh Thuy's Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale. Results: The average score for readiness for self-directed learning was 149.49 ± 18.04. The percentages of students scoring at high, medium, and below-average levels were 19.5%, 30.1%, and 50.4%, respectively. A significant relationship was found between academic year, major, and the desire to pursue postgraduate studies (p<0.05). Conclusions: The readiness for self-directed learning among nursing students is not at a high level. Therefore, nursing educators and managers need to pay attention to this situation and related factors to have appropriate interventions.
