Abstract

Background: Xanthelasma palpebrarum is a medical condition frequently observed and typically associated with dyslipidemia by healthcare practitioners. Patients often present late, when the lesions on the upper or lower eyelids have significantly progressed over an extended period. This issue complicates surgeons' ability to implement a therapeutic approach that effectively addresses these lesions and facilitates reconstructive surgery. Objectives: To delineate the pertinent characteristics and outcomes of surgical intervention in patients with xanthelasma palpebrarum.

Materials and methods: Prospective study, non-controlled clinical intervention on 31 patients with xanthelasma palpebrarum who underwent surgical treatment at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Results: The most prevalent complications that occurred one week after the procedure were hematoma and bruising, which accounted for 22.58% of the cases. Edema was observed in 5 cases, representing 16.12%. Other complications included asymmetry between the two eyes (2 cases – 6.45%), scars (2 cases – 6.45%), and delayed wound healing (1 case – 3.26%). No cases of bleeding, infection, or eyelash ptosis were recorded. Regarding patient satisfaction after the surgery, 14 patients were very satisfied (45.16%) after one week, while 5 patients were somewhat satisfied (16.13%). A month later, there was an increase in patient satisfaction, with 29 cases reporting that they were extremely happy with the treatment outcomes and 2 cases reporting that they were satisfied, which accounts for 6.45% of the total. Conclusions: Surgical treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum is not only safe and simple to execute, but it also has positive outcomes. The diagnosis of this condition is relatively basic.
