Abstract

Background: Acute appendicitis represents one of the main causes of surgical emergencies in the world with an annual incidence of 96.5 to 100 cases per 100,000 adults. For some Cottage hospitals, diagnosing appendicitis is still difficult due to lack of equipment such as CT scanner. Therefore, it is necessary to practice a simple scoring scale that can be used in any area but it has high accuracy. Objectives: To evaluate the Alvarado score and ultrasound combined with the results of appendiceal pathology and to determine the outcome of laparoscopic appendectomy in Hau Giang general hospitals. Material and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 134 patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy from 1/2024-7/2024. Results: The male: Female ratio was 1:1.2; There were 21.6% of patients with an Alvarado score of <5, 17.9% of patients with an Alvarado score of 5-6, 60.5% patients with an Alvarado score of >7; There were 90% of cases with ultrasound results of acute appendicitis; Mean operative time was 49.3 ± 17.8 minutes, Mean flatus time was 28.6 ± 15 hours; mean of postoperative hospital stay was 6.1 ± 1.2 days. There were 5.2% of cases with wound infection, and 0.7% of cases with post-operative ileus/small bowel obstruction. Conclusion: Alvarado score combined with ultrasound is highly effective in diagnosing acute appendicitis and laparoscopic appendectomy is of low risk of complication and safe.
