THE SITUATION OF SLEEP DISTURBANCE AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE PATIENTS

Abstract
Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common digestive disorder affecting sleep. However, understanding of sleep disturbances and related factors is still limited. Objectives: To describe the state of sleep disturbance and to identify related factors in gastroesophageal reflux disease patients at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2024. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 92 patients diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux treated as outpatients at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2024. Results: Sleep disturbances in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease accounted for 63% with an average PSQI score of 7.12 ± 3.19 points. Occupation and retrosternal burning symptoms were noted to be related to sleep disturbances in patients. Conclusion: The prevalence of sleep disturbance in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease is quite high and occupation and retrosternal burning symptoms were noted to be related to sleep disturbances in patients. Therapists and nurses need to pay attention to this situation and related factors to have appropriate intervention strategies to improve the quality of sleep for gastroesophageal reflux disease patients in the future.
