Abstract

Background: Adherence to medication in patients with chronic diseases is a major challenge and non-adherence is one of the main causes of reduced treatment effectiveness, increased recurrence rates, and waste of healthcare resources. Objectives: To determine the adherence rate of traditional medicine in patients with chronic diseases, and to identify factors related to medication adherence of the participants. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 200 patients diagnosed with chronic diseases who had received at least 1 course of traditional medicine treatment, were being treated at Thua Thien Hue Traditional Medicine Hospital, in-person patient interviews using the GMAS medication adherence scale. Results: The percentage of adherence to traditional medicine was 100.0%. In which, 15.0% of patients had difficulty remembering to take the medications. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed an statistically significant association between time of morbidity, number of treatment courses, and comorbid pathology with difficulty remembering medications of patients, with p<0.05. Conclusions: A solution is required to provide guidance and reminders for chronic diseases patients, undergoing short treatment courses, and dealing with comorbidities to ensure they remember to take the traditional medicine.
