STUDY ON THE ANATOMICAL FEATURES OF THE INFERIOR MESENTERIC VEIN ON COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY IMAGING IN VIETNAMESE ADULTS

Abstract
Background: The inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) plays an important role in blood circulation from abdominal organs. Anatomical variations of IMV can cause difficulties in surgery and endovascular interventions in the abdomen. Understanding the anatomical features of IMV is necessary to choose appropriate intervention methods and prevent complications. Objectives: To describe the anatomical features of the inferior mesenteric vein using computed tomography imaging in Vietnamese adults. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 75 patients who underwent abdominal computed tomography at Thong Nhat Hospital from January 2024 to May 2024. Results: The mean age was 56.2 ± 14.7 years, 65.3% male. The diameter of IMV at the confluence with the portal vein was 6.5 ± 1.1 mm. The length of IMV was 18.2 ± 3.7 cm. The distance from the confluence with the portal vein to the beginning of the portal vein was 4.2 ± 1.1 cm. 62.7% of IMVs drained into the splenic vein, 25.3% into the superior mesenteric vein, and 12% into the confluence of these two branches. Conclusions: The study provides evidence on the anatomical features of the inferior mesenteric vein on computed tomography images in Vietnamese people, contributing to the knowledge and having practical applications in the diagnosis, surgery, and interventional treatment of abdominal diseases.
