Abstract

Background: Nowadays, treatment with Traditional medicine is recognized and strongly developed in the world. However, compared with Western medicine, Traditional medicine still has some limitations such as heterogeneity in quality, difficulty in taste, and difficulty in the work of preservation. In order to overcome the above limitations, the application of modern preparation methods to traditional medicines is essential. Objectives: To prepare and test evaluate the quality of Shakuyaku-kanzo-to (SKT) in jelly form. Materials and methods: Jelly that contains extracts from SKT, has analgesic effect against the gastrointestinal disorders, and alleviates some symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. SKT is extracted by hot continuous extraction technique, then condensed into a liquid paste. The formula for producing jelly was developed and selected based on sensations, hardness of the jelly and the quality measurements of the medicinal herbs contained in the SKT. Results: The SKT liquid extract was combined with Carrageenan and Agar with the content of 0.5% each type: soft, monolithic and firm jelly. Starch (0.25%) facilitates the disintegration of jelly and subsequently the release of extract after the contact with. On the chromatogram of the jelly, there are spots of the same Rf value and the same color as the spots in the chromatogram of the reference medicinal material. The agar meets the requirements of organoleptic test/sensory test, mass uniformity, hardness according to given standards. Conclusions: The agar containing SKT ensures some quality requirements of agar preparations, which can be applied as pain relievers in gastrointestinal syndromes.
