Abstract

Background: Orthokeratology (OK) has been proven effective in controlling mild to moderate myopia, but there is limited research on its efficacy for high myopia. This has led to controversy regarding the benefits of OK for patients with high refractive errors. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of overnight corneal reshaping in patients with high myopia. Materials and methods: This non-controlled interventional study was conducted at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from December 2021 to November 2022. Twenty-six patients with high myopia (with or without mild astigmatism) were treated with Global-OK Vision® XM contact lenses. Data from 45 eyes were collected, with a mean follow-up time of 8±2.6 months. Results: Patients were aged 11 to 29 years, with a mean age of 16.73±4.77 years. Initial spherical equivalent refraction ranged from -6.00D to -9.00D (mean -7.04±0.72D). After 6 months of treatment, the spherical equivalent refraction decreased to 0.11±0.12D, and myopia reduced from a mean of 1.44 ± 0.21D to 0.01 ± 0.03D. Refractive error changes showed a decreasing trend throughout the follow-up period. Conclusions: Overnight corneal reshaping with Global-OK Vision® XM effectively slows the progression of high myopia up to -9.00D, demonstrating a favorable clinical safety profile and significant improvement in refractive outcomes.
