Abstract

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a prevalent condition commonly affecting middle-aged individuals. Conservative treatment utilizing hyaluronic acid (HA) has been reported to alleviate pain and yield favorable outcomes effectively. Objectives: To characterize the clinical features and radiographic findings of knee osteoarthritis patients treated with HA and to evaluate treatment outcomes at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Materials and method: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted involving 68 patients (102 knee joints) who received HA injections at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from November 2021 to November 2022. Results: The mean patient age was 62.10 ± 11.21 years, with a female-to-male ratio of 4:1. Obesity (stage 1) was present in 44.12% of patients. 83.33% of knees experienced pain for over six months. The prevalence of stage II knee osteoarthritis was twice that of stage III. After 6 months of treatment, clinical improvement was observed, with VAS scores decreasing to 2.62 ± 1.56 points and WOMAC scores to 20.52 ± 9.03 points (p < 0.05). The mean SF-36 score was 82.54 ± 7.20 points, with 79.89% of patients reporting good or excellent satisfaction. The most common adverse effect was transient local pain, which resolved within three days. Conclusion: Viscosupplementation with HA demonstrated efficacy in managing mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.
