Abstract

Background: Depression is a common and significant mental health issue among the elderly. Depression among elderly people is ignored and not treated to reduce their mental pain. This issue needs attention, especially in healthcare, to improve the health of the elderly in today's society amidst social and technological advancements. Objectives: To identify the statement of depression in elderly patients receiving inpatient treatment at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy hospital. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study design on 106 elderly patients receiving inpatient treatment at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from January 2024 to June 2024 was conducted. Depression was measured using the GDS-30 scale. Results: The proportion of depression among hospitalized elderly individuals was 23.6%, with 1.9% experiencing severe depression and 21.7% experiencing mild depression. Conclusions: Elderly patients receiving inpatient treatment at the hospital have a relatively common risk of depression, not too high but still a worrying number. Therefore, clinicians need to pay due attention and increase screening and early detection, in addition to having supportive care measures to reduce depression in the elderly when receiving inpatient treatment for disease coordination as well as outside the community.
