Abstract

Background: In the elderly, the function of all organs is weakened, but this process is not synchronized between organs and individuals, leading to complex changes in pharmacokinetics including absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion. In addition to physiological changes, concomitant diseases and the use of multiple drugs at the same time in treatment make drug interactions appear at a very high rate. The consequences of drug interactions include: changes in the effects, toxicity or adverse reactions of drugs, causing danger to patients, changing the effectiveness of treatment, and even leading to death. Objectives: 1) To determine the rate and level of clinically significant drug interactions in prescriptions for elderly inpatients at the Department of Cardiology - Geriatrics, Can Tho General Hospital; 2) To identify some factors related to the occurrence of clinically significant drug interactions. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study with 382 medical records at Cardiology - Geriatrics Department of Can Tho  General Hospital from June 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. Using 3 websites: Medscape.com, Micromedex and Drugs.com to check drug interactions. Results: Drug interactions of clinical significance accounted for 47.9% (183 medical records). Among them, the medical records with drug interactions according to medscape.com were 144 records, representing 37.7%, with the highest distribution in the closely monitored category (73.4%, 287 instances); micromedex recorded 172 medical records, accounting for 45.0%, with the moderate level having the highest rate at 51.1% (201 instances), and according to drugs.com, medical records with drug interactions accounted for 47.6% (182 records), with the moderate level representing 71.9% (351 instances). Conclusion: There was a statistically significant relationship between comorbidities, number of drugs in the prescription and the possibility of drug interactions (p<0.001).
