Abstract

Background: Fall is one of the most common medical errors, which may be a significant burden to patients and their families. In Vietnam, because of the overload in the healthcare system, fall prevention has become an essential duty in nursing care. Therefore, nursing students’ knowledge of fall prevention is viewed as a major factor related to the quality of nursing education and reducing the incidence and adverse effects of falls. Objectives: To assess nursing students’ knowledge about fall prevention and its related factors at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Material and method: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from December 2023 to September 2024 and involved 95 undergraduate nursing students in the third and fourth year of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and used a cross-sectional study design. Results: The mean score of nursing student participants’ knowledge about fall prevention was 15.9+3.80/20 score. 74.7% of students had a good knowledge of fall prevention. 25.3% of students had poor knowledge. There was a statistically significant association between the experience of witnessing a fall and students’ knowledge regarding fall prevention (p=0.011). Meanwhile, gender, year level of education, and grade were not associated with nursing students’ knowledge of fall prevention. Conclusion: Nursing students showed good knowledge of fall prevention. However, the incidence of poor knowledge was still quite high. Training courses followed by an experience-based learning model are recommended to enhance knowledge of fall prevention among students towards improving their nursing competence and ensuring patient safety.
