Abstract

Background: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common complication following cataract surgery. The Nd:YAG laser is used to treat secondary posterior capsule opacification. We conducted this study to evaluate the outcomes of Nd:YAG Laser treatment for secondary PCO following cataract surgery. Objectives: 1. To describe the clinical manifestations of PCO following implantation of intraocular lenses (IOLs). 2. To evaluate the outcomes of Nd:YAG laser treatment for PCO. Materials and methods: This prospective study involved 120 patients with Grade II-III PCO following cataract surgery who underwent posterior capsulotomy with ND:YAG laser at Minh Duc general Hospital in Ben Tre province from April 2023 to June 2024. Results: The study group had 102 female patients (85%) and 18 male patients (15%), with a mean age of 69.69 ± 9.70 years. Pearl forms were observed in 48.3% of cases, fibrotic forms in 31.7%, and mixed forms in 20.0%. The mean logMAR visual acuity before laser treatment was 0.84 ± 0.35; one-week post-laser visual acuity was 0.10 ± 0.13, maintained up to the first month. The mean number of laser shots for pearl forms were 30.76 ± 12.41, fibrotic forms were 36.08 ± 11.28, and mixed forms were 40.21 ± 8.29. Conclusion: Nd:YAG Laser is a safe and effective treatment method for managing PCO following cataract surgery.
