Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Fever is a physiological response that enhances chemical reactions to defend the body when necessary. However, excessively high or prolonged fevers can lead to several adverse health outcomes, including dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, nutritional deficiencies due to accelerated metabolism, reduced nutrient absorption, and diminished appetite. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to fever management among parents of children under five years of age at the Pediatric Department of Son Tra Medical Centre in the year 2023. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 102 parents of children under five years old who were receiving treatment at the Pediatric Department of Son Tra Medical Centre. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20.0. Results: The findings reveal that a significant majority of parents exhibit insufficient knowledge (85.3%) and inappropriate attitudes (82.4%) towards fever management. Nonetheless, the practices reported were relatively adequate, with 65.7% of participants demonstrating good practices. The findings also indicated a significant correlation between parents' knowledge of fever management and their educational levels (p<0.05). The fever management attitudes of the study participants are associated with "association" and "child's age," with p<0.05. Additionally, practices in managing fever correlated with the parents’ age, the number of children in the family, the educational level of the parents, and their occupations (p<0.05). The study also identified a correlation between knowledge and attitudes. Conclusions: Only a minority of parents demonstrated adequate knowledge (14.7%) and appropriate attitudes (17.6%), although a majority showed good practices (65.7%). The study underscores the influence of parental educational levels and relationships on the knowledge and attitudes towards fever management. Specifically, parental attitudes were influenced solely by the age of their children, and their practices were associated with their educational levels (p<0.05).
