Abstract
Background: Smoking is one of the most serious issues affecting the health of people worldwide. Currently, the incidence of smoking among young people is rapidly increasing. Study about prevalence and factors associated with smoking among health science students remained limited. Objectives: To describe the prevalence of smoking and factors related to smoking among students of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2023. Materials and Methods: A crosssectional descriptive study was conducted through a self-administered questionnaire survey on 1993 students of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy from March 2023 to December 2023. Results: The overall smoking rate was 7.7%. Among them, the smoking rate among male students was 12.2%, higher than the 4.5% rate among female students. Multivariate regression analysis of factors related to smoking showed that factors such as having a good academic performance compared to excellent academic performance (OR=0.38, p=0.004), having more than 5 friends who smoke compared to having no friends who smoke (OR=5.43, p<0.001), being in the preventive medicine faculty compared to the general medicine faculty (OR=0.30, p<0.001), and consuming alcohol compared to not consuming alcohol (OR=3.38, p<0.001) were associated with smoking behavior. Conclusion: Most smoking students are male. The study highlights statistically significant relationships between smoking and factors such as gender, having friends who smoke, alcohol consumption, providing valuable insights for targeted intervention efforts in tobacco control.
