Abstract

Background: Acute tonsillitis is common in school-aged children 5-15 years old. Tonsillitis often causes many serious complications and affects the student's health. Untreated or incompletely treated tonsillitis can lead to life-threatening complications. Objectives: To determine the rate of tonsillitis in students at primary school in Vinh Long City in 2023-2024. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional to describe the rate of tonsillitis among 662 students at primary school in Vinh Long City in 2023-2024. Results: The rate of tonsillitis in students at primary school in Vinh Long City was 19.8%. The study found an association between tonsillitis and: students' habit of eating cold food OR=1.796 (95% CI: 1.130-2.854, p=0.012), family history of tonsillitis OR=2.203 (95% CI:

1.429-3.396, p<0.01) and history of whooping cough or other throat diseases OR=1.598 (95% CI: 1.087-2.350, p=0017). Conclusions: The rate of tonsillitis in students was 19.8%. It is necessary for Primary schools to develop a plan to prevent tonsillitis for students to limit the rate of new cases and the severe, prolonged progression of the disease to students' eating habits because students who have a habit of eating ice cream or cold foods are at a higher risk of developing tonsillitis.
