Abstract

Background: Incidence of pneumonia due to the atypical pathogen Mycoplasma pneumoniae is on the rise in children. The diverse clinical symptoms, the condition is often overlooked, increasing the likelihood of delayed medical attention. Objectives: 1. To determine the rate of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in pneumonia in children aged 1-15 years old. 2. To describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae-induced pneumonia in children aged 1-15 years old. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study with analysis on 108 children with pneumonia aged 1-15 years old from Decemner 2022 to April 2024 in Can Tho Children's Hospital. Perform tracheal fluid aspiration for real-time PCR analysis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Results: The rate of Mycoplasma pneumoniae was 35.2%, the median age was 6.53.0 years old, the male/female ratio was 0.9/1. The common clinical symptoms include fever (89.5%) and rales sound in the lungs (84.2%).The most common of thoracic radiography was lobe consolidation (47.4%), among there is right lower lobe of lung (36.8%). Blood tests showwed that in most cases have a normal white blood cells, high CRP and 55.3% no lack of anemia. Conclusion: The rate of pneumonia due to MP infection increases from June to October, mainly in the age group from 5 to 10 years old with diverse clinical manifestations, normal white blood cell count, increased CRP and  X-ray shows consolidation in the lung lobes.
