Abstract

Background: Ankle fractures are commonly encountered, accounting for approximately 10% of all fractures. Besides bone injuries, ligamentous damage to the ankle joint is also frequent. These injuries necessitate surgical anatomical restoration to enable patients to return to their daily activities and work. Objective: To evaluate the treatment outcomes of closed Weber B and C ankle fractures using internal fixation. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 60 patients diagnosed with closed ankle fractures of Weber B and C types. These patients were treated with internal fixation from March 2023 to June 2024 at Can Tho Central General Hospital. Results: The average age of the patients was 47.23 years, including 34 males and 26 females. The most common mechanism of injury was supination-external rotation, accounting for 41.67% of the cases. There were 41 cases of Weber B fractures and 19 cases of Weber C fractures. Among these, 28 cases involved isolated fibular fractures, while 32 cases involved combined fractures with other malleoli. Additionally, 34 cases presented with syndesmotic injuries, with 88.33% being Weber B and 31.67% being Weber C. Out of the 34 cases, 21 (61.67%) underwent syndesmotic fixation using screws. The evaluation of treatment outcomes after 6 months showed that 51 patients (85%) had results ranging from good to excellent, 7 patients (11.67%) had fair results, and 2 patients (3.33%) had poor results. Conclusion: Internal fixation has proven to be an effective treatment method for unstable ankle fractures, enabling the restoration of anatomical structure and functional recovery of the ankle joint. This method supports better outcomes for patients, aligning with the demands for mobility and activity in contemporary lifestyles.
