Abstract

Background: Studies assessing the outcomes of treatment for impacted lower mandibular third molar through surgical extraction still present several discrepancies in Vietnam. Objectives: To evaluate outcomes of coronectomy of impacted lower mandibular third molar at EMCAS hospital in Ho Chi Minh city 2023. Materials and methods: A clinical trial was conducted with a study group of 33 patients who had indications or desires for extraction of impacted lower mandibular third molar and received treatment at EMCAS hospital, Ho Chi Minh City from 04/2023 to 09/2023. Results: The study included 33 patients in the coronectomy group and 33 patients in the total removal group. The average surgical time for the coronectomy group was 8.6 ± 2.2 minutes, which was longer compared to the total removal group at 7.1 ± 2.0 minutes (p < 0.05). The root movement range 6 months after coronectomy surgery in the ≤ 25 years old group (4.5 ± 1.9) was greater than in the > 25 years old group (3.1 ± 1.4) (p < 0.05). The percentage of bone fully covering the root surface 6 months after coronectomy surgery was 21.2%. Additionally, clinical characteristics 24 hours postoperatively and the distance from the distal bone crest of the 7th tooth to the CEJ 6 months post coronectomy surgery did not show statistically significant differences between the groups. Conclusions: The coronectomy group had a longer average surgical time compared to the total removal group. Six months postcoronectomy surgery, the ≤ 25-year-old group showed longer root resorption compared to the > 25year-old group. The complete root coverage rate was 21.2% after 6 months of follow-up.
