Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious non-communicable disease that is a leading cause of death worldwide, including in Vietnam. Peritoneal dialysis is an effective solution that can overcome the limitations of other methods to treat end-stage chronic kidney failure in the current period. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of Tenckhoff catheter surgery in peritoneal dialysis in patients with chronic renal failure. Materials and methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted on 38 patients diagnosed with end-stage chronic renal failure with indications for Tenckhoff catheter placement at Can Tho Central General Hospital. Results: The rate of patients having surgery on the left side was 100%. The proportion of surgical patients with omentectomy was 2.6%. The average surgery time was 61.5 minutes, the average number of days in the hospital after surgery was 7 days, the average number of days starting dialysis after surgery was 13.9 days. After filtration, the change in hematological index was higher than before filtration, and the biochemical index was lower than before surgery, but it was not statistically significant. Early complications were intra-abdominal bleeding (2.6%), catheter drop (2.6%), and catheter leakage (2.6%). The most common late complication was the poor function catheter (10.4%), a fallopian tube inserted into the catheter (5.2%). Conclusion: Surgical placement of catheters for peritoneal dialysis is a safe method, suitable for patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure. The doctocs need to pay attention to mechanical complications after surgery. In women, consider the cause of obstruction due to the fallopian tube entering the catheter when suspecting catheter obstruction.
