THE NEED FOR LEGAL MARRIAGE OF GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER PEOPLE IN CAN THO CITY

Abstract
Background: Marriage is a legitimate need for every person, however, to achieve it gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people had to experience a difficult process. Objectives: To survey the need for legal marriage among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals in Can Tho City. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 250 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals in the Can Tho City. Results: Among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, 60% had the need for legal marriage. Gender, age, educational level, age of realizing sexual orientation, economic condition were all related to the need for legal marriage (p< 0.05). The factor that mostly affect to the need for legal marriage was family (4.07 ± 0.794), after that was oneself (3.61 ± 0.949), at last was society (2.56 ± 1.205). Conclusion: A significant proportion (60%) of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in the study had the need for legal marriage, however, there were many barriers, especially family. Providing researches about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people community and psychological support is necessary to the struggle for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people community’s equality and liberty.
