PATIENT SAFETY: KNOWLEDGE AND RELATED FACTORS AMONG UNDERGRADUATE NURSING AND MIDWIFERY STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract

Background: Patient safety has been identified as a priority area in nursing science and the healthcare system. It is one of the most challenges in healthcare. There is a rising number of patients’ mortality in hospitals because of errors in patient safety practices. Management of patient safety and prevention of medical errors are included in nursing competence. Therefore, knowledge about patient safety among nursing and midwifery students is an important issue to ensure patient safety and quality of care. Objectives: To evaluate knowledge about patient safety among nursing and midwifery students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and its related factors. Material and method: A cross-sectional study design was used to involve 139 undergraduate nursing and midwifery students in the third and fourth year of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The student’s knowledge of patient safety was examined based on a self-reported questionnaire including 11 items. Results: The study revealed that the mean score of student participants’ knowledge towards patient safety was 7.28+2.89/11 score. 63.3% of students had a good level of knowledge. Meanwhile, 20.1% of nursing and midwifery students had poor knowledge. There were statistically significant associations between major, year of education, study results, clinical experience, and students’ knowledge regarding patient safety. Conclusion: Nursing students showed good knowledge regarding patient safety. However, 20.1% of students had poor knowledge. Training courses followed experience-based learning model should be used to enhance knowledge of patient safety among students, especially midwifery, third year students, and students had average level of study result.
