Abstract

Background: There has been a significant increase in the number of dengue cases and their severity. Finding factors associated with the severity of the disease aims to increase treatment effectiveness and reduce case-fatality rate. Objectives: To describe the clinical, laboratory features and  identify associated factors with potential shock among children with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Materials and methods: A cross-sectional description study was conducted on 162 children with DHF admitted to Can Tho Children's Hospital from April 2023 to March  2024. Results: The mean age of patients was 10.07±3.27, with children over 10 years old being the most prevalent, maleto-female ratio was 1.13/1. Fever (100%), petechiae (65.4%), vomiting (54.3%) were common symptoms. White blood cells (WBCs) begin to decrease in 3^rd day and lowest value in 4^th day, platelets gradually decrease from 3^rd day and lowest value in 6^th day, and Hct is highest in 4^th day and 5^th day of illness. Factors associated with potentially shock among children DHF were: petechiae, liver enlargement, vomiting, WBCs increased, Hct increased, platelets decreased, APTT prolonged and fibrinogen decreased. Conclusions: Carefully monitoring patients with factors related to potential shock is important in assessing the severe prognosis of the disease and timely treatment planning.
